Governor To Visit Pipeline Break Site

08-22-2003 08:25:AM

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Governor Janet Napolitano says she wants to make sure Kinder Morgan Energy Partners honors "its commitment to get gas flowing back into this Valley." She's traveling to Tucson today to tour the section of fuel pipeline that ruptured July 30th, leading to the problematic shutdown. She says she'll also "check on Kinder Morgan's progress." Yesterday, company officials said they plan to reverse the flow in a pipeline normally used to send jet fuel from Phoenix to Tucson, allowing more gasoline to flow into the Phoenix area. It will also work on repairing a section of pipe that failed a stress test earlier this week.

High Gas Prices Prompts More Drivers To Public Transportation

08-22-2003 08:25:AM

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Rather than filling up at the pump, thousands of Valley motorists are instead filling up Valley Metro buses to save gas. Officials with the city of Phoenix say the Valley's bus system is crowded, but service is going smoothly this week, with standing room only on many commuter buses and local routes. Valley Metro's Transit Information call center reportedly received thousands of calls this week from new riders about bus service. Car pooling is also up. Valley Metro Rideshare, which operates a car pool matching system, says compared to Tuesday a week ago, it saw a jump to 456 car pool matches up from the previous 34. Mayor Skip Rimsza says when the transit system is expanded in the coming years to include more buses and a light rail system, situations like the current gas crisis will not have as much of an impact on commuters.

Survey Shows About Half Of Gas Stations Open

08-22-2003 08:25:AM

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Almost half of Valley gas stations have fuel, and gas lines have been getting shorter. That's the word from Governor Janet Napolitano. She says the Department of Weights and Measures is monitoring the situation twice a day, and as of yesterday morning, 45 percent of Valley gas stations were open. Napolitano says that figure has been fluctuating a bit, depending on the time of day. She warns that over the weekend, the Valley "won't be anywhere near" its normal fuel load capacity at gas stations.

Important To Continue Fuel Conservation

(Phoenix, AZ) -- As a week of long lines at the pump comes to a close, AAA of Arizona is urging Valley residents to continue to conserve fuel this weekend. Kim Pappas-Miller with AAA says even though we are expected to see fuel flowing through the pipeline by Sunday, according to Kinder Morgan officials, the state is not out of the woods yet, and there are many ways to cut back on fuel usage. She says driving slower and turning off the air conditioning when driving in the early morning hours can help. It is also important to combine errand trips, finding places that are close together as to limit your need to drive extra miles. Furthermore, AAA officials say if you are planning a road trip this weekend that is not absolutely necessary, it might be wise to postpone your travels.
